Weller Pottery, Muskota, Swan with Wings Spread Sitting on Edge of Bowl, Nice

$795

For sale is a rare and HTF bowl of art pottery by The Weller Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Muskota" and it is extremely popular among Weller Pottery collectors. The shape is a bowl or planter. The bowl is large as it stands 11" in diameter from outside wing to bowls edge. It stands 4 1/2" tall to the top of the Swan's neck. The bowl has a diameter of 9" from side to side.

The bowl has a round shape with a deep well and it somewhat resembles a man made pond. On the edge of the bowl sits a large Swan with a long neck resting on one of its wings. The glaze colors are in a deep moss green with the Swan having a mix of this green with a beige under glaze. The beak of the swan is done is an orange brown glaze and the bump on the nose in a black glaze. The bowl rest on 3 slightly raised feet on the underside.

The bowl is considered to be in very good condition with no cracks. nicks, chips or dings. I was told there was restoration done to the Swans wings and possibly the neck. The restoration is done so well that it is very hard to see. I wouldn't have noticed it if I wasn't told as it is done that good. The bowl is signed twice on the underside bottom with Weller's impressed block signature mark. There is also the Roman numeral XVII written in glaze. This is 1917 and predates what we Weller collectors have thought this to have been made. It was our belief that the Muskota line was made during their middle period from 1918-1935. This piece is actual proof it started as early as 1917. This is a very rare find in Muskota. I have only seen 1 other version of this bowl in 45+ years as a dealer and collector. I remember that bowl also having restoration work as well.

This bowl was made circa 1917.
