For sale is a wonderfully decorated mat vase made by The Rookwood Pottery Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The vase is a nice cabinet size as it stands 6 3/16" tall and is approximately 4 3/8" at the outside top rim. The bottom foot has a diameter of 2 7/8".
The vase displays a tapered shape with a small round foot and indented collar at the top of the vase. This vase has a very pleasing robin's egg blue background glaze. It is further decorated with a brush stroked floral pattern that resembles a dogwood flower. It also has deep sage green leaves and stems that have the same stroking as the flowers. These leaves and stems are outlined in a black glaze.
The piece is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece is signed with Rookwood's impressed reverse "RP" and sunburst logo along with the roman numerals "XXII" for the year of manufacture, 1922. There is also the mold number "2238" impressed under the date. There are also the painted initials "MHM over an incised circle with the letter A inside. The "MHM" stands for Margaret Helen McDonald and the letter A in a circle is for the artist Louise Abel. It is not often you find 2 artist marks on a piece of Rookwood but this one does.
This will make a wonderful addition to any Rookwood decorated mat pottery collection and would look just outstanding on that Stickley, mission, arts and crafts style bookcase. It is simply amazing that this vase has survived 97 years without a flea nick.
