For sale is a wonderfully decorated mat vase made by The Rookwood Pottery Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The vase is a nice cabinet size as it stands 3 5/16" tall and is approximately 3 3/8" at the outside top rim. The bottom foot has a diameter of 3 1/8".
The vase displays a squat form with a small round raised top lip. This vase has a very pleasing mottled country deep blue background glaze. It is further decorated with a grapevine pattern with leaves dangling from a vine that surrounds the entire lower portion of the neck. The leaves are a sage green and the grapes are a cranberry purple. These leaves and grapes are outlined in a black glaze. The top lip looks like tiger stripes in blue and the mottling in the background glaze is outstanding.
The piece is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece is signed with Rookwood's impressed reverse "RP" and sunburst logo along with the roman numerals "XXII" for the year of manufacture, 1922. There is also the mold number "966" impressed under the date. There are also the painted initials "LNL" for the Rookwood artsist, Elizabeth N. Lincoln. She is one of Rookwood most sought after artist. over an incised circle with the letter A inside.
This will make a wonderful addition to any Rookwood decorated mat pottery collection and would look just outstanding on that Stickley, mission, arts and crafts style bookcase. It is simply amazing that this vase has survived 97 years without a flea nick.
