Grueby Pottery, Matte Green Overlapping Leaves, Lg Flared Vase, Marie Seaman

$4,500

For sale is a wonderful arts and crafts shaped vessel made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Ma. The vase is quite large as it stands 8 13/16" tall and is 6 7/8" in diameter at its bulbous bottom.

The vase displays a bulbous bottom with a large slightly flaring cylindrical neck. It has wonderfully hand tooled leaves that overlap on each other. There are the broad leaves that surround the bottom and a smaller leaf nestled between them. The tooling is sharp and well defined. This is set against a deep matte green glaze that has a lot of character in it. There are areas of thinness in the glaze around the leaves thus giving this glaze a non uniform color in matte green. This vase is considered to be a large form and I have seen this same form used as a table lamp with Tiffany Studios hardware and a hand leaded Tiffany shade on it.

This vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips or any dings. I have checked all the high spots and I only felt one large leaf and a spot along the bottom edge that is a little rough to the touch. This is considered insignificant and unobtrusive. The vase is signed on the bottom with the circular impressed mark which reads "GRUEBY POTTERY BOSTON U.S.A." with a lotus leaf in the middle. It also carries the artist initials of a capital incised "MS" for the Grueby artist Marie Seaman.

This vase is a wonderful example of the arts and crafts era Pottery. It is a hand thrown piece and was modeled by one of Grueby Pottery's finest modelers. The vase is done in a beautiful Grueby green glaze with nicely carved and tooled leaves. I'm quite sure the buyer will be very pleased with their purchase. This is truly a rare example to add to one's advanced Grueby Pottery collection. This vase was made 1904-1908.
