For sale is a very early and hard to find art glass oil lamp shade made by Tiffany Studios, New York. This shade is done in Tiffany's highly sought after gold iridescent wave pattern. The shade is large as it measures approximately 9 3/8” tall and has a diameter of 8 1/2”. The bottom or fit diameter of the shade is 4 1/8”.
The shade displays a globe or orb shape with a slightly raised neck. The shade is further decorated with a brilliant gold Favrile wave pattern with very strong vertical ribbing. The top appears to have a ruffle but this is caused by the ribbing. There are 21 of these vertical ribs. This gold iridescent rivaled Steuben's gold Aurene and Quezal style of art glass. This shade is brilliant in color as you can see wonderful vivid hues of strong platinum blues, deep golds and cantaloupe orange at the bottom. This shade is some of the earliest lighting that Tiffany Studios produced. These were specifically made for his early oil lamps as Electricity was a new innovation at the time. These shades were lost in the shuffle from the conversion to electricity. To find these shades is quite a feat. This is only my 2nd one in 46 years of collecting and dealing.
This shade is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. This shade is signed along the bottom edge that reads "G 248". This is as good as a Tiffany signature as was the custom to sign these shades in this manner. He typically used a letter "S" for shade but this is real early and my belief that the "G" stood for globe. There is no doubt as to whom made this shade and I fully guarantee it to be 100% original Tiffany Favrile. It is a documented shape and the casing of the shade and color is a dead give away.
These type shades very rarely come up for sale. This shade was made circa 1892-1897.
I am looking for an original Tiffany Oil lamp that will work with this shade. Please email me if you have one. Once I find one I will no longer offer the shade for sale.
