Tiffany Studios, Grapevine 4

Sold

For sale is a lovely inkwell made by Tiffany Studios of New York, New York. The inkwell is done in the "Grapevine" desk set pattern. The patina on the metal is the most desirable green/brown. The stained glass is the green white Favrile opalescent. The inkwell is the larger size as it stands 3 1/2" tall and is 3 15/16" square and considered a 4" square inkwell.

This inkwell displays an acid etched Grapevine overlay pattern on a green white opalescent Favrile stained glass body. This filigree is a very complex version of this Grapevine pattern. It sits on 4 bun style feet. This is a very desirable piece of the Grapevine desk set patterns. The patina is extremely nice as it is the green/brown. It still retains its original stepped clear glass well insert and you can see some ink residue inside.

The inkwell is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips to any of the glass. There are some ink stains in the led and under the inkwell insert along the inside top edge where the insert sits on the shelf. The glass insert is also in very good condition with no issues to report. This insert is original as it has a tiny counter sunk pontil. The hinge on the lid is in excellent working condition as the cover opens and closes with ease. Tiffany Studios did not make the inserts to these inkwells as he purchased them The Davis Company of New York, NY. This one is not signed.

The inkwell is signed on the underside bottom edge with the micro impressed mark into the metal that reads "Tiffany Studios New York" along with the model or shape number "844". I believe the Grapevine pattern to have been the first of the Fancy Goods product lines made at Tiffany Studios. This is one of the nicest non-beaded inkwells that I have ever had the pleasure of selling. Those of you who are looking for a very good example of this inkwell in the Grapevine pattern will be delighted with their purchase.

Tiffany started numbering his desk set pieces usually with a 3 digit number after 1902. Since this inkwell has a 3 digit number this inkwell was made circa 1902-1905 based on the micro signature and 3 digit number.
